Artist's Personal Statement
“Somewhere between abstraction and impressionism, is where my work lies. Landscapes reflecting nature and manmade marks; where the sky meets the land - nature and man collide. Broad gestural brush strokes evoke feelings of the place. Nothing stays still, breezes rustle the grasses and the wind blows the clouds. Farmers score the earth, tattooing the land with agricultural machinery, giving rhythmic structure and pattern to the fields. Sunshine and shadow then distort and abstract. Responding to these elements, I enjoy the relationship between tonal values and the interplay of contrasting light. Movement being almost tangible. Colours jump out at me from the fields, and seasons influence the hues.
Somehow, I hope to take you beyond what we can see, inspired by the landscape around us, communicating through gesture, colour and composition. I feel lucky to live in such a space as Norfolk and to be able to reference and reflect my surroundings in paint.”
About The Artist
Sarah Bowett was born and educated in Norfolk. She studied Fine Art at the Norwich School of Art, before gaining a BA (Hons) in Sculpture at Loughborough College of Art and Design, and a postgraduate in Cyprus School of Art.
Having pursued a career in publishing, working abroad and having a family, Sarah returned to Norfolk and became inspired again to paint.
Often when exploring new media with paint, Sarah may collage or use mark making, to express the nature of her surroundings, using chunks of wood, fabric and past drawings to devise her paintings.
In 2005 Sarah was awarded the Syd Davison Memorial Award by the West Norfolk Artists Association. More recently the committee choice awards from the West Norfolk Artists Association, twice in 2025. Previously, Sarah has also been selected for Eastern Open Exhibition 3 times. Sarah is a member of the West Norfolk Artists Association and was a juried member of the Mamaroneck Artists Guild in New York, when living in New York, and part of an art group when living in Brussels.
